Not Signing Enough Appointments From Live Events? 3 Quick Fixes & Training For You!

Have you ever been invited to speak to a group, or hosted your own event, where a majority of the attendees failed to request an appointment at the end of the presentation?

Of course, everyone can have an “off” day where your presentation doesn’t go quite right or the event itself is a dud. But, if this is happening to you consistently, something is MAJORLY wrong.

Bigstock-One-Two-Three-Numbers-On-Dice--36582055You should be booking appointments at EVERY event that you do—whether you are invited to speak in front of a networking group, or you are hosting your own estate planning workshop, or presenting for a referral source.

At LWP’s Tri-Annual Practice Enhancement Retreat, happening June 1-5, we have included a high intensity boot camp known as “Speakers School” where we teach lawyers the art of speaking to not only educate, but to SELL estate planning or elder law services right on the spot.

If you are struggling right now to turn more attendees of your presentations into paying clients, or you are not doing as much speaking in the community as you would like to, I would encourage you to go here NOW and reserve your space.

We are hosting Speaker School because it works.  Past attendees often tell us how they are now forced to carry their calendars with them or bring staff to handle scheduling because people are so anxious to get their appointment on the books after the talk  (…don’t worry about what to say or do to make this happen… we’ll teach you our entire presentation outline and success formula!)  If you can follow a recipe, you can host a 5 figure ROI event!)

This event is limited to 20 attendees, and spaces are filling up. If you are even remotely curious how Speaker School can help you boost your results and make speaking the most profitable thing you do in your practice, view our agenda and reserve your space HERE.

Until then, here are three areas to investigate if you are hosting a ton of workshops but failing to fill up your calendar with fresh appointments from your efforts:

1.     Your marketing– If you are hosting your own events or handling the promotion of events for referral sources, it is possible that your marketing materials are attracting the wrong prospects.  Try tweaking your invitations, flyers, etc. to help prospects better “prequalify” themselves or tweak the demographics of where your materials are being sent.

2.     You are not speaking to SELL- Anyone can give a lecture; speaking to sell is an art.  If your presentation is not designed in such a way to “seed your offer” from the start of the talk and lead your prospects down a funnel where the only obvious choice at the end of the workshop is to schedule an appointment with you, you are wasting your time, effort and resources.

3.     Zero or Insufficient Follow Up– Some people need a few days to digest all that you’ve taught them before they make a buying decision. If you did not cleverly capture their email or phone number during your workshop, you will have no way to contact those people who are still on the fence a few days later.  Talk about leaving money on the table!

Of course I am here to chat if you have specific questions about Speaker School or any of the other workshops we are hosting this year at our Tri-Annual Practice Enhancement Retreat.   Just email me and let me know how I can help.

Best Regards,

Molly

15-25 Initial Consults For Just Two Hours Of Your Time? YES!!

Filling your calendar each month with new initial consults shouldn’t be such a struggle.

In fact, when you know how to easily generate 15-25 initial appointments in just two hours of your time, you’ll never have to lose another wink of sleep worrying about where new business is coming from.

Bigstock-Football-Fan-Celebration-21038801You can just dip into your “toolkit” and make magic happen… on your own terms and on a budget that you feel comfortable with.

So how is it done?  SPEAKING!

We’re not talking about those generic, Chicken Dinner Estate Planning Workshops, either.  Chances are, you’ve tried them before–only to spend a ton of money with very little results.

Here at Lawyers With Purpose, we have a unique methodology for conducting workshops that have worked consistently for 35 years to “put butts in seats,” keep audience members engaged, and close the presentation in such a strategic way that listeners can’t help but rush the podium to schedule an appointment with you.

15-25 new initial appointments per workshop is just the average that our Lawyers With Purpose members experience.  And many are conducting more than one a month!

What would your life and practice look like if you started each month with 15 + initial appointments already on the books?

We’ve got 2 programs just for you!  Our Train the Trainer Speaker School AND “How To Protect Your Stuff in 3 Easy Steps” are where you learn how to make it happen

We are opening these two intensive workshops to just a handful of attendees happening during the week of June 1st in St. Louis, MO on a first come, first serve basis.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never conducted a workshop before or if you’re an experienced speaker who just wants to “sharpen the saw” and boost results.  These two programs will teach you, among other things, how to:

  • Fill the room with only your ideal prospects
  • Engage your audience and hit deep emotional pain points with our training on platform perfection, value proposition and measuring the effectiveness of stories.
  • Speak to SELL by “seeding” your desired outcome, leading audience members down your unique funnel and closing in such a way that incites listeners to take immediate action.

Plus, attendees of the “How To Protect Your Stuff…” Specialty Workshop will leave with our ENTIRE “done-for-you” seminar package, including handouts, PowerPoint presentations, speaker notes, evaluations marketing materials, video & audio of the workshop and audio of stories to use in your presentation.

All you’ll have to do is pick a date and venue and you’ll be ready to host your first workshop as soon as you get home!

If you’re even remotely curious about either of these programs, don’t wait to go HERE now to get all of the details and registration information.  Spaces will go fast—we fill up each and every year.

Finally! An Intensive Legal Workshop That Trains Your TEAM On Practice Success

You’re only one person, and if you want to be successful in your practice, you need to be focused on doing ONLY that which makes you the most money—serving clients, networking with key advisors and handling legal matters.

You should not be answering the phone.

Bigstock-success-and-winning-concept---53462125You should not be “babysitting” staff members so they stay on track.

You should not have to get too involved selling your services, either (hint: your staff members should be your most profitable evangelists… if they are not, you have a problem).

…Plus so many other things that you may find yourself “stuck” handling on a daily basis.

Your team members really don’t want to let you down or add more work on your plate; they simply don’t understand where they fit in the big vision of your practice or how to move beyond their “9 am to 5 pm, punch a clock” conditioning that they’ve been taught their whole lives.

That’s why at our Tri-Annual Practice Retreat this year in St. Louis, we are devoting two entire days to training your team for practice success mastery (June 4th and 5th).

We are going to transform your staff members into the most profitable assets of your practice!

This training includes our Firm Retreat, which is a dedicated, uninterrupted half-day where we will help create YOUR personalized Law Firm “Money Plan™" that will equip each staff member with a step-by-step blueprint to hitting your revenue goals in just four months!

No more “it’s not my job” attitudes. No more “9-5” mentality.

Our team training event will empower your staff members to work your practice as if it were their very own business and their own capital on the line.

Sound good?

Then don’t wait to register for our Tri-Annual Practice Enhancement Retreat.  Bring your staff members to this intensive event but don’t wait, doors close in less than 30 days (May 15th)!  To view the full agenda and pricing information, visit: www.retreat.lawyerswithpurpose.com

Molly Hall

P.S. Think about all of the training you’ve attended to learn how to grow your practice and push beyond limiting beliefs and habits. Why shouldn’t your key staff members do the same?  They arguably have the most interaction with your clients and help steer your practice ship each day.  Make the wise choice to invest in their success to boost your own: www.retreat.lawyerswithpurpose.com

Train The Trainers: Speakers School

People are constantly writing LWP about what a phenomenal speaker Dave Zumpano is, “That guy you brought in to lead that presentation on IRAs was fantastic, I never attended a CLE event that kept me engaged and I actually felt like I had fun!!”

Bigstock-Speaker-at-Business-Conference-65279563This is not a “Dave” thing.

On the Practice with Purpose™ evaluations the speakers are rated a 10+++. This is not a Victoria, Susan or Jeff thing.

You’ve heard the saying “Some people have it, some don’t.” At LWP we believe “Some people have the formal training, some don’t.”

The Craft of Training is the ultimate train-the-trainer curriculum. Bob Gabor, Co-Founder of Ridge Associates has experience creating world-class facilitators for over 35 years. Bob has taught the Train the Trainers™ program for the LWP speakers and he’s back to do it again and kick off the June Tri-Annual Practice Enhancement Retreat with a Two Day Pre-Cursor Training.

Train the Trainers™ not only offers new trainers a fast ascent up the learning curve of training,  it’s also valuable for seasoned trainers who want to learn the secret to creating learning magic in the room.

What you’ll GET…

Learning Goals

The Craft of Training gives trainers the skills to enrich the quality and impact of learning. Participants will practice and get feedback in three performance-critical areas: platform skills, facilitation skills and process skills.

Platform Skills

  • Organizing and delivering presentations to teach content crisply
  • Dramatizing their message with effective body language
  • Preparing and presenting visual aids that drive home key points

Facilitation Skills

  • Making presentations interactive by drawing on participants’ expertise in a nonthreatening way
  • Listening skills to honor the questions and concerns voiced by participants
  • Leading demonstrations, skill practices, and activities to foster maximum skill development and application
  • Coaching to refine participants’ skills

Process Skills

  • Responding to questions with poise and persuasiveness
  • Debriefing to harvest learnings, forge applications, and demonstrate acceptance of participants’ experiences
  • Preventing resistance to create a positive climate for learning
  • Managing resistance to make the most of learning opportunities

AND……

  • Practice. Participants practice the skill that’s just been explained and demonstrated, using actual situations they face in a workshop setting.
  • Feedback. Each participant receives behavioral feedback from the trainer and peers, and each person will walk away with a personal video and a video coaching session.
  • Putting humor in your presentations
  • Learn how to "anchor" your message
  • How to engage your audience
  • Sequencing and transition in your presentation
  • From platform paralysis to platform perfection

What differentiates Ridge Associates in their Train the Trainers™ Program is the way they teach their training skills: participants will leave this program prepared and inspired to achieve more the very next day. With a suite of customization, reinforcement, and delivery methodology your training and speaking skills will differentiate you in your marketplace, every time.

Bigstock-Debate--Two-People-Speaking-D-14929292

A Tough Conversation

“How do I prepare to have “that” conversation with her?” We hear this all the time on the LWP Coaching, Consulting & Implementation (CCI) calls with our member and team alike. We get several emails each week with a subject lines such as “Confidential” or “Do you have a minute to hop on a call” or “I need help”.

Bigstock-Debate--Two-People-Speaking-D-14929292Confronting performance problems, giving honest (tough) feedback, being honest about smoldering conflicts, delivering “bad” news: these are the looming conversations that keep you up at night, or that you wake to in the morning. They occupy your mind while you’re trying to get the “important” work done. Your monkey mind runs rapid all day with, “How am I going to bring it up?”, how you’ll deal with the other person’s reactions, how they will take it, what they will feel, the impact on the business, the clients, and so on and so on. For bosses, team, co-workers equally.

And when you finally do bring it up, it usually occurs at the wrong place, wrong time and without intentional preparation.

It doesn’t have to be this way any longer. But how do we get unstuck with best practice skills for high-stakes interactions?

One of the building blocks (along with People Styles/People Skills™, MIFy™, Go D.U.M.B.™ and Power-In-Partnership™) for the LWP communication technique was New York Times business bestseller  “Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking when Stakes are High”.  At the kick off the Tri-Annual Practice Enhancement Retreat General Session on Wednesday afternoon June 3rd we will lead you through a 90 Minute workshop on how to take the learning of Power in Partnership™, Crucial Conversations and Crucial Accountability and provide you with the necessary tools to prepare for high-stakes conversations to transform frustration, stonewalling, suffering in silence  into powerful dialogue, and make it safe to not only talk about anything as a team but create real time breakthroughs.

The techniques you will walk away with will leave you entering your practice on Monday morning ready to improve the organizational health of all relationships in your business; team, referrals and clients alike.

Bigstock-Monday-72555904

This Monday…. (tomorrow)

Has your mood felt a bit low lately? The New Year isn’t kicking off quite as well as you had hoped?  Well, I’ve got news for you – you’re not the only one!

Bigstock-Monday-72555904I was reading one of my favorite blogs this a.m. by Kimberly Snyder and she mentioned that it turns out this coming Monday, January 26th is “Blue Monday”. Blue Monday is purported to be the most depressing day of the year. The concept was first publicized as part of a 2005 Cliff Arnall, the Centre for Lifelong Learning, a Further Education center attached to Cardiff University, press release which claimed to have calculated the date using an equation of  this milestone represents “the least happy day of the year.”

The formula; W=weather, D=debt, d=monthly salary, T=time since the holidays, Q=time since failing our new year’s resolutions, M=low motivational levels, and Na=the feeling of a need to take action.

  • W= Weather. It’s still dark out.  Although we’re moving further and further away from the shortest days of the year, our daylight hours haven’t yet extended to the point where most people can enjoy them after leaving the office at the end of the work day. Feels like Ground Hog Day.
  • D= Debt. Our holiday bills are due.  Holiday gifts, trips and time off seemed like a good idea when you were filled up with holiday spirit, but the end of January means credit card statements are rolling in, and the financial reckoning is upon us.
  • d= Monthly Salary. Not Meeting Monthly Goal and its Tax time. The New Year is already looming with 11 months behind and its looming time to pay the tax man.
  • T= Time since Holidays. The parties are over. The family and friend gatherings have stopped. January is a month where Americans go into hibernation mode and we are spending more time alone that ever. And if our business calendars are empty and no strategic plan to change that around on the horizon, it feels a bit like solitary confinement.
  • Q= Time since failing our New Year’s resolutionsOur New Year’s Resolutions are failing.  January 17th is the most common date to give up on your resolutions; it’s marked by Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day. Unfortunately, only a fraction of those who make resolutions will achieve their goals, and those that don’t begin losing hope and resorting back to “It is what it is” mindset around this time.
  • M= Low Motivation Levels. And nothing to look forward to until Spring Break or sadly possibly a summer vacation. There is no accountability in place and no one holding your feet to your dreams. No signs of “help is on the way.”
  • Na=The feeling of need to take action. “I know I must do something differently but I don’t have the time, money or energy to power down and make the investment in finding my way” is what I have been hearing from attorneys this month calling with a sense of terror. Some have been calling me for over two years with this exact statement. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Basically, we’re stuck inside, we’re further in debt than ever and we’re confronted with the reality that a “Goal” alone isn’t enough to create the practice we have been wishing for. Appears to be much like the fact pattern of this time last year for many firms I speak with looking to hear more about LWP.

Here is what I know to be true for a cure for the common law Practice: 4 days. Invest in 4 days to get in the room; “90% of success starts with taking the leap of faith and getting in the room.” Mark your calendar now for The Practice with Purpose and Practice Enhancement Retreat February 3-6 in Charlotte, NC.

Don’t let “I don’t have the time, money or energy to power down and make the investment to find the solution” be the default motto for 2015. Now is the time.

Bigstock-romantic-gesture-20319128

I’m Sorry.

“Never ruin an apology with an excuse.”

– Benjamin Franklin

Here’s a little secret for creating the life and business you want: STOP apologizing. Stop beating yourself up for wanting what you want and declaring it out loud.

Bigstock-romantic-gesture-20319128The week following the LWP tri-annual practice enhancement retreats, our firm CCI calls are full of energy. Everyone has a crystal-clear understanding that, if we just stay intentionally focused on our Top 5 from our Money Plan™, we will launch our practice into the business we have been striving for. There is no doubt in our minds that we will get there. And we know how we will get there and who is doing what to get us there. But the following month, we notice there’s a bit less gas in the proverbial tanks. Folks show up to the calls explaining that their #1 Money Plan item isn’t in full swing, and we begin to hear versions of why: “I’ve been trying to get an update on where we are with getting the brochure out there, but Sarah is behind with drafting and I’m feeling maybe I put too much pressure on the team.” Or, “Our goal was five Medicaid applications for November, but I’m seeing that I don’t understand the MMMNA entirely so I should get that down before I start walking into nursing homes.”

The above scenarios are all versions of Apologizing.

It’s that simple. It’s the “human stuff” that stops us.  It’s our past, habits, patterns, lack of rules of engagement, and our lack of accountability and the freedom to speak and act honestly.  Realizing and correcting this tiny little secret will create the life and business you want. Getting stuck in the apology vortex shows up in various ways, not always in the verbal format of “Sorry.” You’ll see it more often than not in these situations and ways of being:

  1. Habit: Many of us were raised to be polite and put others first. Parents who teach taking responsibility for any problems or issues that come up, or who teach that apologizing is a form of politeness, will often breed over-apologizers. Sometimes a child will learn this just by witnessing one parent say “sorry” too much to others.  This typically shows up with a pre- and post-qualifier of “I’m sorry” with really no statement or justification after it. These words just come out before and after almost every statement they make. “I’m sorry, but I didn’t find that funny.” They walk past you in the hall and say “I’m sorry” and you’re not even sure why or for what.
  2. Self-Defeat: I don’t feel like I’m good enough, so I’m going to make sure you know I’m aware of it but have a plan to turn it around. Maybe you show up carrying an extra 40 pounds when, at the last retreat, you were down 20. So before you can even get the hellos and hugs out, you protect yourself from judgment by making an apology about who you are and who you are not. This usually shows up with a pre-qualifier along the lines of “I’ve been so busy….”
  3. Seeking Reassurance: You need to get community input before you take action. The idea was great at the time we declared it. I was clear on what was being asked of me and what I needed to do, but once I got back to my desk, it all went out the window. I began to second-guess myself and became paralyzed. This usually shows up with a pre-qualifier of, “Well, I needed to double-check with you before I started, because this one thing wasn’t totally clear….
  4. Fear of Conflict: We are clear in the beginning about what we want. Everyone is nodding their heads in agreement and excitement. Yet when we meet the following week, they have done very little. I want to explode (and I have in the past, but the whole team shut down and I was the bad guy). They are working on so many things and doing some great stuff in other areas, so I should just let this one go until next week. Let them catch up on their work and bring it up next week. This usually shows up with a pre-qualifier of “I don’t mean to complain but….”

People will persistently test your apology meter. Quite often it’s a byproduct of their own “stuff” when it comes to pursuing (or not) their own BHAGS (Big Hairy Audacious Goals). Don’t get caught up in living your life through the lens of others’ habits and limiting beliefs. Most often they are completely unaware of them.

Lori Deschene, author of the “Tiny Wisdom” eBook series, said, “While we can never know other people’s intentions, we can recognize that our words influence our state of mind – and apologizing when we’ve done nothing wrong needlessly creates guilt and undermines our confidence. It can also create an imbalance in our relationships, since it tells other people we think we are always responsible for any potential conflict or miscommunication; and also sends the message that we’re more interested in being agreeable than being honest.”

Today, if you find yourself apologizing repeatedly, ask yourself, “Did I actually do something that sincerely requires an apology?” If not, ask, “Do I really want to communicate that I think I did?”

Let me know how you make out; I would love to hear from you.

The Art Of Surrender

“Let go or be dragged.” ~ Zen proverb

Four weeks ago the LWP partners began our customary quarterly partners retreat at a Hyatt in Atlanta at 9 a.m. sharp. We began the day in customary fashion, after Dave ensured that we had a mealtime plan, by analyzing our quarterly goals. We carefully reviewed who is doing what to reach goal, our money plan from the previous quarter and then where we have nobody leading.

Bigstock-White-flag-old-style-vector-54229970Like all businesses, marketing was where the spotlight shined loud and clear. What I appreciate about our collective skill sets is how quickly we are able to shift from driver mode right into solution mode. We revisited hiring outside consultants, as we have done in the past. It would take at least six months to get them up and running; plus, how do we find someone who understands the dynamic of an estate and elder law firm vs. a hunt and kill mindset at all cost?

At the end of the day we agreed that I would go full-time into marketing. I am naturally the best person to lead this, and the organization needs me to lead it, own it and nurture it.

I’m not going to lie – I resisted. Hard. My control freak showed up immediately:  “I know (control freaks always know best) that X will happen,” “Who’s going to lead Y,” “Who’s going to coach Z,” “We have been making such great progress on Z, I can’t just abandon ’em now.”

I finally GOT IT. I have been working with team members for 17 years, hearing the exact same words when their attorneys ask them to step up and replace themselves. I never fully understood what the root of the resistance was. Now I get it.

The hesitation does not stem solely from fear and the unknown aspects of change. It’s not just fear of what’s next and whether the team member can actually pull it off. Sure, the uncertainty is a big piece, and fear of failure has a giant room at the inn as well.  But in all honesty, the biggest piece comes down to leaving with a feeling of abandonment – abandoning the team, the clients and what you have taken personal pride in developing and perfecting. It’s the essence of, “I said I would do this and I gave it my all and now I’m leaving the baby. Do they have all they need to make certain this doesn’t nosedive?”

So we resist, we justify that “they need me” and we attempt to control the situation, instead of investing in how we are going to become the next, better version of ourselves and create a better version of the business. Dang it, there it is again, that 2mm shift.

But if we can detach from the logistics of how what we are currently doing will get done, and anchor to how we are going to step into our new role/world/life, the art of surrendering begins.

As soon as I got on the plane, I got to work. I looked at what I am doing non-marketing-related and to whom I can responsibly shift it over. I quickly came up with a suggested transition plan. I pulled out our marketing plan, the money plan, and realized not only that I can do this, but that I am very much the best person for the job. I can do this, and I will do this. I sat for the next two hours and 20 minutes while trapped on the plane and mentally surrendered to letting go of what was, to allow the new reality to permeate, and to embrace the sense of excitement, along with a healthy level of challenge.

But I couldn’t do it without detaching first and allowing for the possibility of what’s next to unfold. Yes, I know this is a skill and it must be practiced, daily. And it is never, ever mastered. But like my good friend Candee always says, “You must be willing to try it on.”

That honestly is the process for giving up control and the art of surrendering. It’s simply one small step (emotions, logistics and movement) at a time. And then you can course a realistic present and a future path and plan. Eventually you find your new normal.  And that’s really the story of growth.

Bigstock-Leadership-concept-image-with--53690437

Leadership

The term “leadership” is all the rage on social media these days – and it is definitely on most entrepreneurs’ wish lists. Yet when I ask people what leadership means to them, I often hear some multifaceted variation that’s equivalent to dismissing the need for relationship. In this day and age I have actually heard, “People today should be thankful they have a job in this economy.” I can assure you, in no way, shape or form is this leadership.

Bigstock-Leadership-concept-image-with--53690437In my experience, leadership is charting or changing the course to take a stand for unity. It’s so much more about finding leadership within that will get the work out and the consistent cash flow in. And fast. It is Mindfulness + Self Awareness + Social Awareness + Self Management.

Self-Awareness is showing up on time with empowering energy, and general concern for everyone’s time and experience while they are with you. Social Awareness is supporting your team, showing up focused and present, keeping your word and taking full responsibility for how you show up in the world. Self-Management is showing up prepared, projecting onward motion, without an unstable tone combined with tension demands. Even though most leaders are active, you don’t want to come off harsh, with a self-serving need to push your own agenda. The minute you become disengaged and start pointing at them, you resign from being a leader.

Leadership is not strength or force.  It is not based on “old school” thinking that smart is good enough and that great leaders are tough and can always muscle through – no one can sustain continuous strain. It is not survival of the fittest. Leadership does not manage from a place of control – team has to go along to get along and must stay in the box built. It is not from a place of personal position – sway whichever way, defer decisions or create fear based on authority.

Every great leader touches your head to make you think, touches your heart to make you feel and always gives you something to carry with you later, a walk-away message. The way I see leadership, here are some of the key tenets:

  • Never dehumanizes, but fills up, guides, includes and creates
  • Tend and befriend vs. command and control
    • Willing to live the examined life, a spiritual seeker
    • How we do what we do is just as important as what we do
    • Emotional intelligence
    • Power is used to bring wisdom and clarity for others
    • Not forced, common practice
    • In order to empower, you have to give up your power
    • Of the people, for the people while honoring them for their conviction

Leaders have an ability to get people behind one another and bring out the best in each of them. They identify their own weaknesses, and provide solutions to increase efficiency and productivity. Never “Here’s what’s wrong, now solve it or we’ll be having a different conversation.” They are very much “part of.” They have the ability to be the manager and make sure that tasks are getting completed, with an empowering leadership element in that. It usually is very difficult to be manager/leader at the same time, but true leaders can accomplish this at all times. They can verbalize the “hard” things to say, even when it hurts, because they are accurate and necessary for the growth and success of the company and the individuals in the company – even when they can’t see it.

A leader is loyal and committed, with a reassuring way that permits people to let go of panic and trust in themselves to accomplish their goals.  A leader has the ability to help individuals sort through a tremendous amount of information and put them on a path of clarity and direction, with specific short-term steps that lead to long-term success.

You know you have great leadership when you have engaged employees who are innovative and empowered to get the job done while never being afraid to use their voice!
